In Conversation with DR Julia Stamm FRSA : Exploring responsible AI, agency and why we need to rethink the narrative around women in AI.

In the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence, one narrative keeps resurfacing: that women are somehow falling behind.

Julia Stamm isn’t buying it. As the founder of She Shapes AI, she works to spotlight the work of female leaders and entrepreneurs in the AI space.

Julia is on a mission to reshape not just representation in AI but the way we think about participation, responsibility and progress itself.

Challenging the “Women in AI” Narrative

“There’s one thing that drives me a little crazy, I have to admit,” she says. “And this is this narrative that women are lagging behind in AI and that they just have to lean in more and that women fear AI.”

Her perspective flips the script entirely. She believes that women have a have a thoughtful approach to AI and they are more concerned about the technology andsocietal implications of it. When building, she sees women asking themselves "what problem are we truly trying to solve and  what are the implications?”

Rather than a gap in capability or ambition, Julia sees a difference in approach, one rooted in responsibility and long-term thinking.

"instead of telling women to lean in, we should really tackle these concerns, this in turn will also address the adoption gap."

A More Human Question About Technology

At the heart of Julia’s work is a deeper philosophical question: one that goes beyond tools, trends or technical capability. Quoting Pope Leo the 14th she says that the important question is not what AI can do, but who we are becoming through the technologies that we build and what we are using them for.

It’s a powerful reframing, shifting the focus from capability to consequence and from innovation to identity.

From TED Stage to Real-World Impact

Julia’s ideas have resonated far beyond her immediate network. She recently gave a Ted talk on the topic of moving beyond certainty in the AI revolution.

The talk centers on a theme that’s increasingly urgent in today’s AI landscape namely agency and responsibility.

What surprised her most was who responded. She shared that so many people felt that the talk resonated with them. Many from very tech heavy backgrounds which she didn't expect.

Her message isn’t anti-technology, it’s pro-awareness.

"I'm really thrilled and positevly surprised to see that when I talk about this, it doesn't come across as bashing tech or bashing AI, but really that this is a much more nuanced approach…”

Building a Platform for Responsible AI

Through She Shapes AI, Julia is turning these ideas into action.

“We are a catalyst for women led, responsible AI innovation.”

That means more than just visibility. Through their flagship awards, they work to spotlight the work of female leaders and entrepreneurs in the AI space, showcasing the amazing work that they do in developing and deploying real world AI innovation. Solutions that are responsible and address concrete problems. They also provide training helping women to become more AI fluent at a strategic level.

The Bigger Picture

Julia Stamm’s work highlights something the AI conversation often misses: progress isn’t just about speed or scale, it’s about direction.

Her message is clear. The future of AI won’t be defined solely by what we build, but by how and why we build it. And perhaps most importantly, by who gets to ask the questions along the way.
